some of you may've heard about that fancy "bionic reading" typefont thats supposed to be easier for neurodivergent people to read (if you're unfamiliar, it bolds the first few letters of each word to make it easier to follow)

well guess what, its locked behind a $500 a month API to write in because fuck you!

introducing, Not Bionic Reading! it is literally just the bionic reading typefont but for free. god bless neocities

anyone who can, pls reblog!

So there’s a little more to this than just “it’s locked behind a $500/month paywall”. The API is meant for developers to integrate the service into existing sites/apps. Thankfully the developers made a free app for users.

That said, their pricing is just mind boggling for what ends up being something that can seemingly be done in about 160 lines of pure JavaScript

This is it, this is the actual code from the above link that does the actual text processing, not even 30 lines.

Yeah APIs are useful so devs don’t have to reinvent the wheel ad nauseam, and yeah it costs money to host the API services, but their whole product could have just been a Node.js library that developers integrate into their site/app.

And none of this changes the fact that the people making this have copyrighted and patented their technology, making it pretty clear they want to be the sole proprietors of this framework

Anyways, support open source software
